Insertion Lace Design
The front of my Holoku has an inserted lace design of intertwined Maile/Ilima leis taken from a Hawaiian quilting pattern. Maile is a fragrant vine which grows in the forests at the higher elevations in Hawaii. A maile lei was worn for special occasions. The Ilima is recognized as the official flower of Oahu. An Ilima lei was only worn by the ruling class. Combined, these two leis create a special, traditional pattern.
